Healthy Herbs That Support Good Health

A lot of people are already conversant with the fact that drugs are poisons and should only be taken when the advantages per time are greater than the disadvantages. As a result, there is increase in the search for new medicinal plants and the study of the known ones. Examples of well known healthy herbs include rosemary herb, mint, dandelion, celery and spearmint. These plants are more beneficial than drugs if used properly.

Basil is recognized by several people as the king of herbs. It is one of the oldest and it comes with lots of phytonutrients for man's benefits. The herb is expensive in some areas and it is highly respected in some traditions across the world. The scientific name of this useful herb is "Ocimum basilicum". Varieties of basil include Mediterranean Cultivar (sweet basil), Asian basil, lemon basil and Thai basil.

There are several health benefits of the basil herb. The first is that it contains chemical compounds that prevent diseases and health complications. Secondly, it contains several polyphenolic flavonoids such as orientin and vicenin. These chemicals reduce the effects of radiation on the body. Furthermore, the plant is rich in essential oils such as eugenol, linalool, citral, citronellol and terpineol. These oils reduce the potential of having bacterial infection and inflammation.

Some of the most important contents in basil herb include beta-carotene, vitamin A, lutein, zea-xanthin and cryptoxanthin. The concentration of these compounds in the basil herb is higher than in most other leaves. These compounds are known for fighting aging.

Celery herb grows well is very common in the Mediterranean region. It is useful as medicine as also as food condiment. Known scientifically as Apium Graveolens, it is known to grow well in areas where the soil has good amount of moisture and nutrients. People who are overweight can use celery herb without worrying about weight gain. In fact, the herb's low calories and large amount of non-soluble fiber even help to support weight loss. Other useful chemical elements in it include vitamin A, vitamin C, niacin, riboflavin and lutin. Lutin is an important flavonoid that helps to prevent cancer.

Dandelion herb is another useful plant. The leaves, roots and other parts of it have something spectacular to offer. Its use as medicine is also another reason why people like it. Its scientific name is Taraxacum Officinale but it is also called priest's crown, Irish daisy, monk's head, lion's tooth and blowball. The roots have antioxidants that prevent diseases. The leaves are also low in calorific value; you can get just 45 calories of energy in 100g of dandelion herb. Other materials in the herb include potassium, magnesium, manganese and iron.

Stomach cancer can be prevented by taking garlic. Garlic can be taken raw or mixed as spice in stew and rice. It has the properties that can cure cancer, coronary artery disease and different types of infections.

Other healthy herbs include Rosemary Tarragon herb, sage, savory, peppermint and sweet marjoram. Sweet marjoram is also used in cooking delicious meals. It also contains Vitamin A and zeaxanthin.
