What Are Kettlebells?

By Mike Sherman

What in the world are kettlebells? The answer actually isn't that complicated. While they may be incorrectly referred to as cattle bells or kettle balls, they are an antiquated version of weights, a piece of workout equipment that is staging a comeback.

However, that doesn't quite answer the question at hand. First used in Russia, with the name of "giryas," they look like large balls. They instantly grew in fame and took Europe by storm during the days of the strongmen. If you look for images of Sandow Klein, and other strongmen from his time, you can see them using kettlebells to train and build their large muscles.

These days in the strength training world, kettlebells are making a huge comeback. Trainers who are experienced in kettlebell training themselves are promoting the weights for anyone who is looking to get in shape and build strength. Russian personal trainers Pavel Tsatsouline and Valery Fedorenko, are two of the biggest backers for kettlebell training and want everyone to be aware of how useful kettlebells can be personally and professionally.

The next thing you want to find out is how to use kettlebell training to work out. It is key to realize how versatile the weights are. Kettlebells can be used for sit-ups, swings, push-ups, and more. There are tons of sites out there with their own kettlebell training routines varying by level of expertise but it is crucial to exercise caution and safety. After an intense workout, the sweat on your hands will make it hard to maintain a grip on the handle. Dropping kettlebells on your foot, head, or any part of your body can result in severe injury. You want to be sure to wipe the sweat off your hands every now and then, regardless of what type of kettlebell training session you are partaking in, if you are not wearing wrist wraps.

There are plenty more articles that can explain what kettlebells are and go further into detail about kettlebell training. She has an abundance of resources to assist those who want to learn more. However, the best option is to try kettlebells yourself to find out if they're the best equipment for you.
