Is Green Lipped Mussel Powder The Notable Super Food For Longevity?

By V K Rajagopalan

The New Zealand green lipped mussel has been an extremely popular food source in New Zealand for ages already. It's a flourishing industry which is worth approximately three hundred million NZ dollars. Generally, mussel farms yield more or less ten tons of mussels per hectare. In relation to protein production, mussel farms are nearly 200 times more efficient in comparison to onshore livestock farms.

Nowadays the mussels can of course be farmed in other countries, but those farmed in New Zealand are considered to be premium quality in terms of quality. This is mainly due to the water quality where they're farmed. The New Zealand authorities has some of the most rigorous environmental laws and regulations in place, and water samples are taken at regular intervals for independent evaluation to look for traces of heavy metals, bacteria, and also various other bio-toxins.

Okay, we recognize that green lipped mussels from New Zealand are of the best quality money can buy, but why is this specific kind of mussel so unique?

Green lipped mussels, when consumed fresh, are known to inhibit an "inflammation-supporting" pathway known as 5-lipoxygenase. Because of this, a few supplement manufacturers have started adding concentrated green lipped mussel extract to several of their products which are manufactured to combat ailments such as arthritis.

The large pharmaceutical firms are certainly disputing the anti-inflammatory properties of these mussels, but of course we all know, the big pharmaceutical manufacturers dispute all natural home remedies. They tried to persuade the world that omega three supplementation is worthless, and yet today even the FDA recommends it.

The mussels are also a terrific source of lipids and omega-3 essential fatty acids. Quite a few health conscious individuals have even changed from fish oil supplements to green lipped mussel supplements. While oily fish are a richer source of omega-3 fatty acids when compared with mussels, many deem mussel extract to be a less risky choice. The reason for this being that only farmed mussels will get used, and therefore, risk of heavy metal contamination has been eliminated.

Fish oil on the other hand is produced from fish that are taken from the sea, and of course it's a very common fact that heavy metal contamination in the world's oceans is getting gradually worse. Even the best fish oil you can get is derived from fish which have at least some amount of toxic contamination. This is why it's always wise to select a supplier carefully.

In order to acquire a high quality extract, the New Zealand green shell mussels should really be freeze dried quickly after they've been harvested. They are then turned into powder in order to aid lipid extraction, and it this extract which you'll have in a decent supplement. Lower end makers will however often purchase the powder that is left over after the lipid extraction process. This powder is of an inferior quality, but of course it's more affordable, and that means bigger profits. The moral of the story... think thoroughly before buying.
