Some Basics of Nutrition and Staying Hydrated

By Tran Taranpado

In this day and age, youth sports has become quite competitive. Athletes have to consider all sorts of approaches when it comes to tackling the competition in their sport. Nutrition and hydration is quite vital things to consider by competitive players in any game. What you do on the field isn't the only thing that determines whether you do well in your sport. It is also the type of nutrition which you feed your body with.

Quite often, athletes do not pay attention at all to nutrition or hydration. Many young athletes will probably work out hard and in doing so will definitely sweat. When people sweat, they lose not just water. When they sweat, their body will shed minerals, electrolytes and all sorts of nutrients. Plenty people do not realize how critical the loss of electrolytes can be.

An electrolyte is a type of component that will carry the electrical messages that is transmitted from your brain to other parts of your body. Not like other components like fats, carbs and proteins, electrolytes are not stored anywhere in the body. Once these are lost, they are gone forever. The signal that your brain sends to your muscles become weaker the fewer electrolytes that you have running through your system.

When the brain signal gets weaker, there can be very critical consequences. There is a chance that muscles can cramp. Your mental focus will fade and your reactions will be much slower than usual. All of these have the potential to deter an athlete's performance in their sport.

It's also very critical to consider that the average drink that is rich in electrolytes is also probably rich in sugar and carbohydrates which supply energy. However, the more sugar and carbs there are in a drink, more energy is needed by the body to take in the electrolytes. Therefore, it's important that there are fewer sugar and carbs because it makes the electrolytes easier to absorb.

Overall, taking care of your body off the field is just as important as what athletes do on the field. Making sure athletes are hydrated and stay hydrated throughout their activity is important to their health.
