How to Get the Most out of Jogging

By Peter Sward

One of the simplest exercises you can do is jogging, and it requires no special equipment. It's also one of the most effective in terms of the health benefits and the calories you burn. The following tips will help you get started with this exercise or will help you get more out of your current routine.

One of the best things you can do to stay motivated is to run with a friend or even a group which is similar to having a bike tour in a group. Running with a partner can be a great source of motivation, but if you prefer to run alone, that's okay too. When you run with someone, you are less likely to quit too soon. Be careful to not let conversation distract you, but it can be more enjoyable to talk to someone while you jog. Be sure to focus on jogging and maybe save the conversation for when you're finished. Running with a partner is one way of keeping this activity interesting.

The best way to begin is to start off with a slow pace, and then build up from that. You don't want to be over-stride, and run with a smooth and even gait. Always take care that you are not leaning excessively in any direction, and just keep your back and body relaxed and erect.

If you're jogging and are kind of new to it, it's best to keep your pace no more than your ability to talk while you jog. Consider your purpose for jogging, and if it is for fun and health, then you can have that without injuring yourself by going too hard or fast, so consider why you're doing it and adjust accordingly. Always keep your pace consistent and relaxed from the very start, excluding slow ramp up, to the end and your warm down. Always avoid just stopping your jog from your normal pace to an immediate full stop because that can cause injury.

It's essential to avoid injuries in order to get the most out of jogging. Jogging is a great way to improve your health and fitness but there are certain injuries associated with this activity. Listening to your body and watching for warning signs is a great way to avoid injuries. You want to push yourself but not past the point of over exhaustion. If you are just starting out with jogging, start off slowly and gradually increase your speed and distance. If you feel any sharp pains when running, stop and if the pain is not relieved, consult your doctor. You will end up doing more harm than good if you push too hard, so pay attention to how you feel when you run. It's always good to check with your doctor, but if you can run you can receive the benefits, and you can start at practically any age - so don't let that stop you. It is not unusual at all for experienced runners to feel like they cannot wait to start a good run because it just feels good. By sticking to the above guidelines, you'll be able to enjoy the benefits of running for many years.
